FARMER'S DAY: BUSHBUCKRIDGE - 24 APRIL 2024

The farmer's information day, organized by MASDT and Netafim, took place at Marisana Farm in Bushbuckridge on Wednesday, the 24th of April 2024. Invitations were extended to farmers from various areas in Bushbuckridge, as well as stakeholders including the Department of Agriculture. The event commenced at 10 am. Registration proceeded smoothly, and Mr Nyalungu, the farm owner, warmly welcomed everyone. Chris Williams, CEO of MASDT, assumed the role of program director and delivered a speech on climate change and its impact on small-scale farming. The attendees, including farmers, actively engaged in discussions on mitigating the adverse effects of climate change in agriculture.

Martin Bahnemann, the Netafim representative, provided insights into Netafim's drip irrigation systems and recommended various equipment for efficient water and cost management in farming. He also encouraged farmers to procure irrigation systems through MASDT to benefit from a 25% discount. Many farmers expressed their intention to install drip irrigation on their farms. To bridge the language gap between speakers and farmers, Collen Mashigo, MASDT BDO, provided interpretation services throughout the program.

A hands-on demonstration of placing and connecting streamline X in Mr Nyalungu's field involved all attendees. At the conclusion of the event, farmers conveyed their appreciation for MASDT's initiatives and expressed motivation to excel in their agricultural endeavours. The Department pledged to collaborate closely with MASDT BDOs to enhance farmers' skills and, consequently, bolster food security in Bushbuckridge.
